De Roman Ports expeditie
Stichting Roman Ports houdt zich bezig met het zoveel mogelijk levend houden van het erfgoed van de oude Romeinen, en meer in het bijzonder met hun havens. Havensteden zijn bij uitstek de plaats waar ideeën, mensen, goederen, culturen en religies elkaar ontmoetten. Tweeduizend jaar geleden beschikten de mensen die voor ons leefden niet over de communicatiemiddelen die we tegenwoordig hebben. Havens waren daarom niet alleen de plaatsen waar schepen aanlegden, gelost of geladen werden, maar ontmoetingsplaatsen voor mensen uit heel Europa, grote delen van Afrika en Azië waar nieuws, ontwikkelingen en kennis werden uitgewisseld.
We kijken natuurlijk vanuit technisch perspectief naar een haven: hoe zat de haven in elkaar, hoe is die gebouwd, welke faciliteiten waren er. Maar eigenlijk zijn we ook op zoek naar het menselijk aspect. Hoe leefden de mensen? Wat deden ze? Hoe dreven ze handel? Wat aten en dronken ze aan boord of thuis? Wat was er nodig om met een schip vol koopwaar vanuit de ene haven naar de andere te varen? Wat voor schepen gebruikten men en wat was er nodig om de, soms zware, handelswaar op de uiteindelijke plaats van bestemming te krijgen? Kortom, we zijn dus op zoek naar het alledaagse leven van de Romeinen in een havenstad.
WIJ NODIGEN U GRAAG UIT OM DEEL TE NEMEN AAN ONZE EXPEDITIE.
Maar zoals elke expeditie kan ook de onze niet zonder financiële middelen. Daarom heeft het bestuur van onze stichting besloten een expeditie club in het leven te roepen. Een club van leden die tegen een contributie van een minimum van € 65 per jaar speciaal ‘Roman Ports Expeditielid’ worden.
Wat krijgen zij daarvoor terug?
- Ten eerste ontvangt elk nieuw lid het exclusieve Roman Ports koffietafelboek waarin een bloemlezing, met vele foto’s, van artikelen uit ons digitale magazine.
- 4 keer per jaar een nieuwsbrief (indien gewenst)
- Elk jaar deelnemer aan een verloting van een speciaal voor ons gemaakt schilderij van een impressie van een Romeinse haven
- Diverse nog nader te bepalen initiatieven.
Maar vooral de wetenschap dat zij medefinancier zijn van nieuw onderzoek naar en instandhouding van het erfgoed van Romeinse havens.
Naast de Expeditie club zijn we natuurlijk blij met elke andere donatie.
EEN SITE GEWIJD AAN DE ROMEINSE HAVENS, SCHEPEN EN HANDEL OVER ZEE
Roman Ports is een non-profit organisatie die zich op tweeërlei manieren sterk maakt voor de antieke Romeinse havens: een grotere bekendheid en een fonds ter ondersteuning van deze havens. Deze site is dan ook bedoeld voor een breed publiek: voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de Romeinse oudheid, thuis boeken lezend of als toerist rondreizend; voor zowel scholieren als voor onderwijzers.
In 2023 zijn we begonnen met een Roman ports Expeditie Club. Wordt ook lid en ontvang ons nieuwe, Engelstalige koffietafelboek met een keur aan rijk geïllustreerde artikelen. Voor meer informatie klik op het donatievenster rechts boven op deze pagina.

Born in Leeuwarden and became interested in Rome and her heritage as a student of the 'Stedelijk Gymnasium' of Leeuwarden.
André is working as trainees support / facilitator and IT professional at the 'ROC Amsterdam'.
He hopes to be able to contribute to the promotion of and knowledge about Roman ports.

Dr. Jan Theo Bakker
Jan Theo Bakker studied Classical Archaeology at the University of Leiden (The Netherlands).
He wrote two books: ‘Living and working with the Gods’ (1994) and ‘The Mills-Bakeries of Ostia’ (1999).
Jan Theo is specialised in the Roman Port of Ostia, project manager of the Internet group Ostia-L and owner of the most consulted website about Ostia (www.ostia-antica.org)
Together with Gerard Huissen he produced a couple of short video-films about Ostia.
Chief editor
Gerard, who lives in Maarssen (Holland) at the moment is one of the founders of Roman Ports. Besides hundreds of photographs he produced the film ‘A town behind a town’ about Ostia and Alberino Vicari (see article in our first edition) and, in cooperation with Jan Theo Bakker, two small films about ‘Travertine cornerstones in Ostia’ and ‘The Casa dei Molini’. Gerard is also responsible for the section ‘The Necropolis of Portus’ at the website of Jan Theo Bakker www.ostia-antica.org

Statutes & objectives
These are the highlights of the by-laws of Roman Ports
- Roman Ports is a foundation with an international character located and registered in the Netherlands
- The Foundation's aim is to promote, at the international level, the knowledge, study and publication of the cultural heritage of the Roman Ostia Antica, Portus, all other Roman ports and environs for the widest possible audience.
- The Foundation shall endeavor to reach its goal by setting up social media pages for the purpose of communication with all those interested in this topic and creating a website where articles, videos, interviews, etc. regularly will promote the several Roman Ports. The Foundation may use other communication channels for the design and implementation of specific projects and by creating a network of organizations with similar objectives.
- The Foundation shall be expressly not profit-making.
- The Foundation’s financial means shall consist of the following:
- Subsidies, donations and donors.
- Testamentary dispositions, legacies and donations.
- All other gifts and benefits.
- The board of the Foundation consist of the board members (see category ‘board’). Members of the board shall never be employed by the Foundation.
- Only board members have the right to pass solutions. Solutions will be taken by the majority of the board. (Suggestions from outside the board are always welcome)
- The Board is charged with managing the Foundation. The Board shall have the power to conclude contracts, make purchases, and dispose of registered property. The Board is not competent to conclude contracts in which the Foundation itself is guarantor or severally connects itself, or to guarantee the debt of a third party.
- The Board represents the Foundation in and out of court. The power of representation is vested in the Chair together with the Secretary, or the Chair together with the Treasurer, or absent that, their deputies appointed for that purpose by the Board from among its members.
- If there is a vacancy in the board everybody can run for election. The present board members will decide.
- The Board shall examine the audit as prepared by a financial expert who reports his findings to the Board. The annual documents are adopted by the Board after it has taken note of the report by the external expert.
- The Board shall have the power to establish rules for settling issues which are not contained in these by-laws. The rules of procedure shall not be in conflict with local, state or federal law or these by-laws. The Board shall be entitled at any time to change or eliminate the rules.
- The Board shall have the power to amend these statutes.
